Four Tips to Landing Your Dream Job

You may have heard the saying “if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life”. Imagine getting up in the morning, going to work, and actually getting paid to do something that you’re passionate about and love doing. Does that sound amazing (but maybe impossible!) to you? I am telling you it IS possible.

Here are four tips to landing your dream job. Are you READY?!

Figure Out What You Really Want (what you really, really want!)

Imagine you were 6 years old and someone asked you what you want to be when you grow up. Do you think that 6 year old you worries about not achieving that goal? Of course not. Mentally strip back your life and find what makes you happy, what ignites that passion inside you. Don’t just pick a career you think will make you a load of money or something that you feel you have to do because of the educational choices you have made because it would be easier. What would you like to do, day in and day out? Now is the time to be honest with yourself. If you really want to follow your dream, trust me, you will make it happen. Passion can mean the difference between success and failure.

Learn Learn Learn...and Learn Some More

You have figured out what really gets you going, what fires up that motor inside. Now you need to evaluate whether you are trained or qualified in this area. It’s tricky to do this while you may already be working or have family or other commitments - but you can do it, even if you have to do it slowly. It can be overwhelming when you identify your goal because all you want to do now, is get there...but the journey seems long. Picture yourself when you reach your goal. Picture your life, how you will feel and how much you will enjoy your work when you get there. Positive thinking and picturing the outcome is a powerful tool.
Keep in mind that you may have to start at the bottom as an intern or apprentice or if you are starting a business, it won’t happen overnight - you will still need to work for it! But this will also give you the opportunity to learn the fundamentals and help you to get a solid grounding to excel.

Network Like Crazy!

Once you have started the journey and you are invested in yourself, start putting your name or brand out there. It might seem old school, but it really is all about who you know rather than what you know. You never know if they know someone who might be able to help you and open a door you can’t seem to get through. Sign up to networking events, hand out business cards, ask for meetings or coffees to discuss a common interest, get yourself on LinkedIn, where do your new people hang out? Don't be afraid to reach out to people that are in your field of interest. Reach out in a personal manner, don’t just fire off a generic message and expect them to respond. Ever heard the saying “throw a lot of shit to see what sticks”? Do not apply this method to your future. It screams desperation and you are way better than that.

Keep Your Eye On The Prize And Do Not Give Up

It’s quite possible that your dream seems unobtainable – that’s OK, unless they are actually physically – not mentally- impossible! The important thing is not to give up, keep powering through and visualising how your future will be. Don’t listen to those who think your dream is just a dream or those who doubt you, believe in yourself, even when doors close. You just need one to open. Persistence is key.
