#MogulDrops : Procrastination is a b*tch.

Let’s talk about the biggest b*tch in town, procrastination.

A big thing that got me when I was moving up in my career was my good old friend, Big P (no, not that P).

Whenever I needed to step up my game, put my name forward for something, apply for a job that would mean more responsibility and a bit of stretch, tackle my to do list that I knew I needed to do whilst launching my business…I would do all of these ‘needful’ things before I would do it.

And usually, once I had completed my ‘needful’ task it would be too late to take actual action. Either the deadline had passed or it was 1am and I was exhausted.

But these things weren’t all that obvious as procrastinations at the time. For example, I would research the job more, look at alternative courses to make sure I was applying for the right one, try and get a bit more experience before I would apply to that role.

Does any of this sound familiar?

It’s not our lack of experience that holds us back, it’s the fear. The fear of failure. Not being good enough. We don’t cut the mustard.

We put all of this energy into coming up with excuses as to why we need a little bit more time, a bit more experience. But what if we do something crazy and, wait for it…. Put our energy into telling ourselves why we CAN do it?! Ta-daaa!!

Next time you recognise yourself procrastinating, ask yourself why. When you hear the negative excuses, stop. Flip it around and ask yourself why you CAN. Why you are ready. Why this is meant for you.

I’ll give you a prime example. When I was starting my business, I had it in my head that I REALLY needed an office. Right there and then. How else was I supposed to work?

So I took myself off to Ikea, sourced a desk, a chair, some nice file boxes…oh and a pretty pen holder plus a nice flower to go on my pretty new desk.

Took it all home, assembled it right where I wanted it. It took me hours because I wanted the sense of achievement. Hmmm sense of achievement of putting a desk together… (here is said pretty desk, with pretty flower!)

Then I took my laptop to my kitchen table and went to work.

I’m not even kidding!

The reason being is that I was scared to take the next step in my business so I went and did something fun but ‘needful’ before I could take the next step.

All I did was waste my time. I ended up selling my desk as I only sat at it once, I preferred my kitchen table or my sofa with my laptop on my knee.

I could have written a new blog, did the website update I needed to do, launch my business Facebook page…anything that was on my list to do. But no, I told myself I needed a desk as that was sooo important.

Procrastination is one of the most popular forms of self-sabotage, because it is super easy to do.

What are you procrastinating on today? Are you going to stop it and just go get your shit done? Because if you are serious about up levelling in your career, you’ll find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse.

Where do you want to be in 5 years’ time? Acing your career or business? Or be exactly where you are today?

That might seem a bit harsh but that is my intention.

I want you to get yourself out of your own way and go for it!

Why? Because you are f*cking awesome!
